Whatcom Community College ASWCC Art Club co-hosts puppetry Cabaret featuring String and Shadow, Peregrine Puppet Theatre, Vox Fabuli and more. Admission to the cabaret performance at WCC is free of charge.
World Puppetry Day was established in 2002 by UNIMA, the Union Internationale de la Marionnette, a non-governmental organization affiliated with UNESCO, and has been celebrated around the world since 2003. Bellingham celebrated World Puppetry Day for the first time in 2019 in partnership with the Alternative Library where the three-night mini-cabaret sold-out all shows. Local volunteers, performers and arts groups came together in late 2019 to plan a Bellingham World Puppetry Day celebration with the goal of increasing awareness of the artistry and technical advancement of puppetry, and to demonstrate that this art form goes well beyond childhood play.
The festival includes a line-up of local and regional performers:
March 6: Festivities begin with a puppetry display during Art Walk on Friday, 5 -7 pm
March 7: Trivia Puppet Company presents Puget Sound Puppetry Festival in Seattle, noon to 8 pm. Get tickets here.
March 8: Pickford Film Center features Dark Crystal, the mystical adventure film by the Henson studio (famous for Muppets). Local marionette artists will entertain in the lobby before the show, 4 pm
March 14: The Whatcom Museum FIG features Pappenspiel performing and teaching children and families, noon.
March 15: Welcome Marionettes host an open house at their magical studio theatre in the woods of Deming (details below), 1 – 3 pm
March 20: Bellingham Storytellers’ Guild features puppetry and story

World Puppetry Day is March 21, 2020, and Whatcom County is celebrating with a mini-festival of performances and workshops throughout March. The festival includes a line-up of local and regional performers in a variety of marionette, mask, string, shadow and stick puppetry media.

Andy Koch (pronounced “cook”) moved to Bellingham from Seattle in the fall of 1973 to attend Fairhaven College. It was meant to be a temporary move.
